After swarming, the population may slowly decline as the intensity of conditions abates. At the end of this yearly cycle, the bees achieve a steady state of population for maintenance, and the cycle is ready to repeat once again.

A similar cycle is seen in more southerly latitudes, but it can be based on different circumstances. Honey production is not as important a survival tool as the ability to move away from pests and migrate in search of water. Although individual colonies may produce less honey in the tropics (an oft-heard complaint about Africanized honey bees), the beekeeper can keep a far greater number of colonies than would be possible with European bees in the same environment.

Having a mentor close by to guide me, especially hands-on when I’m in the hives, would be so valuable. It would ease the learning curve considerably and would reduce my stress immeasurably. I live too far away from the “local” beekeeping organization for it to be useful in that regard.
